Cutaway model of an electric actuator

The workforce at Auma—a company that has been manufacturing various electric actuators since 1946—approached me to create an artistic, full-scale wooden replica of one of their actuators. The sculpture is crafted from linden and cherry wood, incorporating aluminum and threaded rods, and is mounted on a black slate base. The production process: The linden wood was prepared by cutting three planks (each 7 cm thick and approximately 300 cm by 50 cm) into blocks, planing them, and gluing them together into a single solid block. After the drying phase, the measuring and layout process began; it was at this stage that the true complexity of the machine's design became apparent. To achieve a perfect cut, one must approach the form gradually, as any surface imperfection would be immediately visible.

It was also essential to keep all carving chisels perfectly sharpened at all times. The actual carving process took around 200 hours—I had completely underestimated the time required for this project! In between carving sessions, I worked on cutting the stone base and preparing the mounting hardware. The surface was not sanded; its finish is entirely the result of the carving cuts. This is certainly one of the most intricate pieces I have carved to date, given the multitude of subtle details featured on the machine.
